Nathaniel Veltman, 20, is accused of running over three generations of a Muslim family in London, Ontario. Detective Superintendent of Police Paul Waight believes the crime was planned and the motivation was hatred of the Islamic faith.
The fatal victims are a 46-year-old man, Syed Afzaal, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, and their 15-year-old daughter, Yumnah Afzaal. Besides the 74-year-old mother of Syed Afzaal. The youngest son, 9-year-old Faez Afzaal, remains hospitalized. The accused is in custody and will be held liable for four first degree murders and one attempted murder.
Some officials spoke out condemning hate crimes against the Islamic population, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Pakistan’s Prime Minister also stated on his Twitter account that: “Islamophobia needs to be tackled holistically by the international community.”
